Table C1: Number of Medical School Graduates, by Last Completed GME Specialty

Medical School Graduation Years 2006-07 through 2012-13

The table below displays the number of U.S. MD-granting medical school graduates who completed a residency program in each specialty, by type of medical degree program (e.g., MD-PhD). The data displayed are for the most recently completed ACGME-accredited specialty and subspecialty as of Dec. 31, 2017. For example, for the graduating class of 2012-13, emergency medicine was the last completed specialty for 1,382 MD graduates, seven MD-PhD graduates, and 43 graduates with another combined MD-graduate degree (e.g., MD-MPH). The graduation years are shown in three-year increments, from 2006-07 through 2012-13. Individuals who are shown as having completed a residency may be active again in another residency program. Counts shown for specialties do not include counts for the related subspecialties. Please contact residentreport@aamc.org with any comments or questions.

Selected Finding: Looking at the 2012-13 U.S. MD-granting medical school graduates, 78.5% completed at least one residency training program within four years of graduating.
