Coronavirus (COVID-19) Clinical Guidance Repository
New section
Last Updated April 14, 2021.
The AAMC Coronavirus (COVID-19) Clinical Guidance Repository is an open access resource for all clinicians and hospitals across the United States. The content is collected from academic medical centers (AMCs), specialty societies, and federal partners. The goal is to identify, summarize, and highlight areas of alignment in clinical practice during the pandemic.
Here you will find up to date COVID-19 treatment and management guidance to help clinicians optimize patient care. For some topics clinical alignment guidance summarizes areas of agreement across several institutions and/ or organizations. Clinicians can view, access, and download the materials.
This repository is meant only for clinicians (not the general public) to access clinical and patient management information regarding COVID-19 that supplements their own independent, professional judgment, and evaluation of their institution’s unique circumstances (AAMC Coronavirus (COVID-19) Clinical Guidance Repository Disclaimer).
After reviewing the repository, AAMC would appreciate your feedback on the usefulness of this resource. Please send your feedback to AAMC via email.

Submit COVID-19 Clinical Guidance
The AAMC will consider additional materials for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Clinical Guidance Repository. While the repository is publicly available, only AAMC member institutions, affiliated organizations and societies, and federal partners can submit clinical guidance to be displayed on this site. By submitting clinical guidance, you agree to the following terms and conditions (AAMC Coronavirus (COVID-19) Clinical Guidance Repository Submission Terms).
As of November 25, 2020, new guidance on Crisis Standards of Care have been added. Many hospitals across the United States are experiencing large surges in COVID-19 patients and intensive care units are already over capacity in many areas. There may come a point in the crisis at which all the contingent surge adaptations cannot compensate for the overwhelming caseload and decisions must be made to do the most good with limited resources. At that point, clinicians and hospitals shift from conventional to crisis standards of care (CSC). Guidance on CSC below:
National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
- Crisis Standards of Care: A Systems Framework for Catastrophic Disaster Response (Volume 1): Cross-Cutting Themes
- Background and key elements of CSC.
- Provides guidance on determining core values that affect allocation decisions (e.g., fairness, duty to care, duty to steward resources, transparency, consistency, proportionality, accountability)
- Provides guidance on engaging families and palliative care departments in end-of-life discussions (pages 1-78 to 1-86)
- Crisis Standards of Care: A Systems Framework for Catastrophic Disaster Response (Volume 4): Hospitals and Acute Care Facilities
- Provides guidance on optimizing communication and ensuring that clinicians know what support is available for their decisions under CSC
- Hospital and Acute Care Toolkit
- Rapid Expert Consultation on Staffing Considerations for Crisis Standards of Care for the COVID-19 Pandemic
- Provides guidance on understanding the key principles of CSC and informing and engaging hospital and health system personnel in CSC planning
