Studies show that training in leadership competencies is most effective when introduced early in a student’s medical education. As part of our commitment to helping the next generation of physicians thrive, the AAMC has expanded its comprehensive leadership development programming to include medical students.
The AAMC created RISE: Developing Future Leaders in Academic Medicine & Science for 2nd Year Medical Students with the goal of helping students build leadership skills and knowledge that are vital to both their journey as a medical student and their future as a leader. The program’s curriculum focuses on four core areas: Relationships, Influence, Self-awareness, and Effectiveness.
This two-and-a-half-day leadership development seminar is designed for rising second-year medical students and provides a foundation in leading self and leading others. Areas of focus include increasing self-awareness, improving interpersonal and team communication, establishing personal wellness practices, developing strategies for being a part of a successful team, embracing a growth mindset, making the most of mentor relationships, learning techniques for productivity and time management, strengthening skills to influence and motivate others, and more.
