2024 COF Spotlight Recipients
The COF Spotlights were created to recognize compliance leaders who have exhibited exceptional networking, professional development, and collaborative efforts as well as advancing their clinical, research and education missions. We are pleased to announce this year's Spotlight recipients:
Compliance Service Spotlight Recipient: Brian Bates
The Compliance Service Spotlight has been established to recognize an individual who exemplifies compliance excellence, leadership and has made innovative contributions over a significant time period to the Compliance community.
Mr. Bates is the Chief Compliance Officer for UAB Medicine/UAB Health System (“UAB Medicine”). Mr. Bates is responsible for the daily operations of the UAB Medicine Compliance Program and helps coordinate compliance activities across the organization. Mr. Bates takes a “hands-on” approach to compliance working with UAB Medicine leadership, providers, and staff to identify, manage, and mitigate the risk areas that are specific to health care services provided by UAB Medicine. Mr. Bates has worked with and been an advocate for hospitals and providers for over twenty-eight (28) years.
Health Compliance Team Innovation Spotlight Recipient: Office of Enterprise Corporate Compliance at Thomas Jefferson University
The Health Team Innovation Spotlight has been established to recognize the achievements of compliance teams serving AAMC member organizations who demonstrate how they successfully implemented initiatives that drove, fostered, or introduced innovative means through which to promote compliance, increase engagement, or otherwise raise awareness about compliance policies, and resources.
The Office of Enterprise Corporate Compliance team at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a forward-thinking and community-engaging group of professionals. With our data-driven approach to community outreach, the team was able to impact over 42,000 individuals across all our campuses. The team had successful organizational-wide, departmental and community-based initiatives including:
- Implementing the EMTALA on-site survey-contracted with an EMTALA surveyor to improve our knowledge base and receive tips related to EMTALA compliance
- Targeting departmental engagement efforts with newly added facilities
- Performing over 75 outpatient facility visits.
- Organizing a Doctor’s Day Wellness Fair to connect with providers and obtain input on the best way to engage in Compliance related education efforts.
- Evaluating 3rd party vendor marketing materials at 24 practices across our healthcare organization to ensure no Conflicts of Interest were identified.
- Developing and engaging students and organizers at our university with fun, interactive compliance-related games, during a pep rally for the men’s and women’s Basketball teams.
- Motivating, inspiring and incentivizing employees to complete our Code of Conduct training by incorporating innovative technology to design real-world compliance scenarios, achieving a completion rate of over 90% within the first month of deploying the learning module.
Outstanding Mentor Spotlight Recipient: Susan Marre
The Outstanding Mentorship Spotlight has been established to recognize an individual who has demonstrated outstanding mentoring of a student, colleague, or employee with mutual respect, guidance, and knowledge is shared, or have helped them find ways to achieve their best in the COF Community.
Sue Marre is the Director of Billing Compliance at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Sue has been a dedicated and enthusiastic Health Information professional for over 45 years and has an ongoing passion for mentoring. Sue has taken many mentees under her wing, showing them inspiration and dedication for mentorship for current and upcoming professionals. Whenever asked, Sue provides recommendations on the path to continue education and has encouraged mentees to get involved with local and national organizations, such as the Massachusetts Health Information Management Association and AAMC COF.
DEI Efforts in Compliance Spotlight Recipient: Valerie M. Dixon
This spotlight has been established to recognize a team that helped move the needle on diversity, equity, and inclusion within their department and or their organization.
Valerie M. Dixon is Chief Compliance & Privacy Officer for the University of California, Irvine Health System. As a member of the UCI School of Medicine’s Executive Leadership team, Valerie supports their diversity strategic plan as it relates to the development of the UCI School of Medicine’s Office of Belonging, Equity and Empowerment (BEE). BEE was established to serve as a hub for their community to access resources, education, training, and diversity programming.
Team Excellence Spotlight Recipients: Northwell Health Office of Research Compliance Team
This spotlight has been established to recognize a team of exemplary compliance programs who ensure members of the team are leaders in promoting compliance, and their institutions, locally and or nationally.
The Office of Research Compliance (ORC) at Northwell Health is a dynamic team that embodies a commitment to compliance that extends beyond their institution, serving as a beacon of best practices locally and nationally. Their dedication to promoting ethical conduct in research and healthcare is evident in their numerous efforts to educate, collaborate, and elevate compliance standards across the board.
