    William Pinsky, MD, will retire from his positions as CEO of Intealth, president of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMB), and board chair of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research, or FAIMER, at the end of 2023. Dr. Pinsky has served in the positions for more than seven years.

Both have been serving in these roles on an interim basis since September of 2022.

Dr. Vertino is a professor of biomedical genetics and pathology and laboratory medicine and the Wilmot Distinguished Professor in Cancer Genomics at URSMD.

    Shahzad Mian, MD, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Mian is a professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the U-M Medical School and has served as vice chair of clinical sciences and learning for the department since 2019.

    Also at U-M Medical School, Raymond Yung, MB, ChB, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Yung is the inaugural Jeffrey B. Halter Professor of Geriatric Medicine, chief of the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine, and director of the Geriatrics Center and the Institute of Gerontology at the medical school.

    Walter Douglas Jr. has joined the Morehouse School of Medicine as its executive vice president for operations and business affairs. Prior to joining MSM, Douglas served as the vice president and chief operating officer of Neighborhood Health Services Corporation.

    Alma Littles, MD, has been named interim dean of the Florida State University (FSU) College of Medicine. Dr. Littles, who has served as senior associate dean for medical education and academic affairs at the medical school for nearly 20 years, will succeed John P. Fogarty, MD, who is retiring after 14 years as the College of Medicine’s dean. Dr. Littles became acting and then founding chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Rural Health not long after the FSU College of Medicine was created in 2000. The appointment is effective Feb. 1.

    Arturo Saavedra, MD, PhD, has been named dean of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, effective April 15, and will also serve as VCU Health System executive vice president for medical affairs. Dr. Saavedra comes to VCU from the University of Virginia where he is chair of the Department of Dermatology and president and interim CEO of University of Virginia Physicians Group.

    The Division of Urology within the Department of Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine will be elevated to department status, effective July 1, and Gary Faerber, MD, now chief of the division, will become interim chair of the new department. Dr. Faerber joined the Duke Division of Urology in 2018 and has served as the associate chair of Ambulatory Surgery in the Department of Surgery.

    University of Florida (UF) Health has appointed Timothy Morey, MD, as chief medical officer and Jennifer Hunt, MD, MEd, as chief of staff for UF Health Shands. Both are faculty members of UF College of Medicine, and Dr. Hunt will take on her new role while continuing to serve in her current position as chair of the Department of Pathology, Immunology, and Laboratory Medicine.

    Also at UF Health, Gregory M. Janelle, MD, has been named interim chair of the department of anesthesiology in the UF College of Medicine. Dr. Janelle was a resident in anesthesiology at UF, serving his senior year as chief resident prior to completing a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, and has held numerous leadership positions within the College of Medicine and the department of anesthesiology.

    Eric Lander, PhD, has been named chief scientist of a new organization called Science for America, a “solutions incubator to address urgent challenges, driven by an unprecedented alliance of leading philanthropic organizations.” Currently on academic leave, Dr. Lander is a member and was founding director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, a professor of biology at MIT, and professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School. He is also the former presidential science advisor and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and former co-chair of the president’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

    Two medical school deans and sitting members of the AAMC Council of Deans have passed away recently. José Capriles-Quirós, MD, MPH, MHSA, passed away while serving as dean of Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, an appointment he began in July 2021. Dr. Capriles-Quirós was a respected pediatrician specializing in neonatal-perinatal medicine. He brought significant leadership experience to the position at Universidad Central del Caribe, having previously served at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of the Office of Accreditation and Licensing, and President of the Steering Committee of the Self-study for Accreditation of the Middle States on Higher Education. Susan Smyth, MD, PhD, executive vice chancellor and dean of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine, died Dec. 31, 2022, after a battle with cancer. Dr. Smyth joined UAMS in 2021 from the University of Kentucky, where she was chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and director of the Gill Heart and Vascular Institute. G. Richard Smith, MD, former dean of the UAMS College of Medicine and founding director of the UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute, has been appointed to serve as interim dean.

DuPont Chair in Biomedical Science at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Lorenz serves as professor of microbiology and molecular genetics and is a member of the faculty at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The institute is the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law. Dr. Derse is a CFAS Ad Board member, chair of the CFAS Advocacy Committee, and the CFAS representative for the Association of Bioethics Program Directors.

    Richard “Tom” Thomas, MD, DDS, has been named associate vice president and dean of the West Virginia University School of Medicine’s Eastern Division and chief medical officer for WVU Medicine Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers, effective Jan. 1, 2023. Dr. Thomas retired as a major general from the United States Army where he commanded multiple levels and served in several key staff positions, culminating as the director of Healthcare Operations and the chief medical officer for the Defense Health Agency.

Dr. Tracy will also serve as professor of medicine at the Larner College of Medicine and director of research at the UVM Health Network. Dr. Tracy is professor of epidemiology and public health, vice chair for research services, epidemiology and public health, and head of the Division of Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.     Ravi Thadhani, MD, MPH, has been named Emory University’s executive vice president for health affairs, executive director of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, and vice president of Emory Healthcare’s board of directors, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Dr. Thadhani, professor of medicine and academic dean at Harvard Medical School, is also the chief academic officer at Harvard University’s Mass General Brigham and chief of the division of Nephrology. He will replace Jonathan Lewin, who announced he would step down from the roles and rejoined Emory’s faculty earlier this year.
