Medical education leaders from several AAMC-member institutions met with lawmakers and congressional staff on Capitol Hill on Feb. 6 to advocate for academic medicine priorities, including programs that support the development of the physician and research workforce. Occurring in conjunction with an AAMC annual retreat, the medical education leaders – which included academic medicine deans, physicians, and professors – provided key insights into the critical role of academic medicine in improving the health of all in communities across every district.

The leaders urged lawmakers to prioritize completing the fiscal year 2025 spending bills and to support $1.51 billion for Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Title VII health professions and Title VIII nursing workforce programs, along with legislation to reauthorize these HRSA programs before they expire at the end of the fiscal year. Further, they emphasized the importance of graduate medical education in addressing doctor shortages and improving access to care, as well as research funding and biomedical training in ensuring patients receive advanced treatments. During the meetings, the medical education leaders were able to elevate the unique contributions of academic medicine to the patients and communities their institutions serve.
