The AAMC joined a letter on Dec. 4 with 19 other organizations advocating for the highest funding level possible for the Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) program (PDF) at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as Congress finalizes the fiscal year 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bill. The AAMC supported $175 million in funding for the AMD program in an April letter (PDF) to House and Senate Appropriations committee leadership [refer to Washington Highlights, April 19].
The letter noted key benefits to pathogen research through robust funding of the AMD program. “Funding for AMD will ensure that our public health system and research institutions can continue to benefit from rapidly evolving, cutting-edge science and technology. Increased funding would promote greater innovation through improved metagenomics, data integration, and crosscutting genomics infrastructure, as well as expand workforce development to meet the needs of state and local health departments and streamline laboratory operations.”
