The AAMC and 17 provider organizations signed a May 14 letter of support (PDF) for the Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024 (H.R. 7855). The letter, which was sent to lead sponsors Reps. Yadira Caraveo, MD (D-Colo.) and Carol Miller (R-W.V.), highlighted the importance of ensuring that rural teaching hospitals have the financial resources necessary to invest in new training programs. The legislation would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development program, an existing, effective federal grant program that provides funding for the startup costs associated with residency programs in rural areas. The AAMC supported the legislation upon its introduction in April [refer to Washington Highlights, April 5].
