The AAMC joined a Dec. 3 letter with 478 other entities urging House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee leadership to permanently enact a charitable deduction for non-itemizers (PDF) in any 2024 year-end tax package and/or final 2025 tax reform package. The letter highlighted the bipartisan Charitable Act (H.R. 3435/S. 566)  which would restore a charitable deduction for individual taxpayers.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2018 (PL 115-97) limited the ability of taxpayers who do not itemize deductions to reduce their taxable income through charitable contributions. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act of 2020 (PL 116-1360, PDF) provided temporary relief in 2021 for taxpayers to deduct up to $300 for charitable donations without itemizing deductions. This temporary change was aimed at incentivizing charitable giving.
