Selection Criteria

Individuals or teams of two individuals may be nominated. All nominees must have a faculty appointment at AAMC-member medical schools or teaching hospitals, but rank is not a criterion for this award.

Nominees should demonstrate a significant contribution to medical education and will be evaluated by the review committee on the following precise criteria:

  • The nominee has made a demonstrable impact on medical education. This may be a broad impact across the medical education continuum or depth of impact in a particular area, such as undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, or interprofessional education.
  • The nominee has had a significant impact on advancing the science of health professions education.
  • The nominee demonstrates strength in medical education scholarship.
  • The nominee shows personal expertise as a teacher and mentor.

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in all criteria listed above.

Guidelines for Entry

Anyone may submit a nomination. Nominations must be received by Jan. 24, 2020, via the electronic entry form. The fields required for nomination can be previewed here.

The review committee will select up to three finalists. Nominators of finalists will be notified by Feb. 28, 2020, that they are invited to submit letters of support. Final-round letters of support must include:

  • One two-page letter of support of the finalist authored by an AAMC-member institution’s dean, chief executive officer, or president on institutional letterhead.
  • Three additional two-page letters of support attesting to how the finalist demonstrates the criteria for the Flexner Award.

Letters of support must be submitted by April 3, 2020. There is no need to compile these letters before notification on Feb. 28.

The winner of the award will be notified by July 1, 2020, and honored at Learn Serve Lead 2020: The AAMC Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
