Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS)

In August 2009, the AAMC's Board of Directors approved the creation of the Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS). This action established the longstanding Women in Medicine program as a formal AAMC professional development group, congruent with other AAMC groups.

The mission of the GWIMS is to advance the full and successful participation and inclusion of women in all roles within academic medicine, and to provide a venue for women to participate in advancing the AAMC mission to improve the nation’s health. The GWIMS aims to serve as a national forum to advance women's success in medicine and science by addressing:

  • gender equity
  • recruitment and retention
  • awards and recognition
  • career advancement
