In February 2025, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its Firefighter Cancer Initiative (FCI), a pioneering program aimed at reducing cancer risk among firefighters. The campaign included a multi-city roadshow, the 7th Annual International Fire Service Cancer Symposium on February 20 - 21, 2025, award ceremony at the Dolphins Cancer Challenge on February 22,2025, and a robust media and social strategy. The initiative spotlighted Sylvester’s leadership in firefighter cancer research, prevention, and advocacy. Over 3,000 firefighters have enrolled in the national Annual Cancer Survey, and the program includes the first Firefighter Cancer Registry, environmental sampling, biomonitoring, and survivorship services. The campaign amplified awareness through bilingual outreach, earned media, and social content that generated over 109,000 impressions and nearly 5,000 engagements. The celebration honored those who protect our communities and reinforced Sylvester’s commitment to institutional excellence and public health.
What was the most impactful part of your entry?
The most impactful element was the multi-city roadshow and symposium, which brought together scientists, first responders, and advocates to exchange ideas and drive policy change. It created a national platform for firefighter cancer awareness and prevention.
What is one thing you learned from your entry/experience?
Coordinating multiple events across cities while maintaining consistent branding and messaging required extensive cross-team collaboration. The lesson learned was the importance of early planning and flexible execution to adapt to local needs while preserving campaign integrity.
