“Shiniqua’s miracle” is a feature story in the UF College of Medicine’s summer 2025 Florida Physician magazine issue. It tells the harrowing journey of a mother and child brought back from the brink of death thanks to groundbreaking, first-in-Florida, multidisciplinary treatment. The story was developed for print and digital publication to engage the college and health enterprise’s key internal and external audiences, namely current and prospective patients, employees, trainees and alumni.

What was the most impactful part of your entry?
Shiniqua’s resilience and faith, both spiritual and in her UF Health care team, is the most impactful part of her story. It’s no small feat to survive three codes and come out stronger. Seeing how she advocates for herself and her son alongside their UF Health providers is more than inspiring. There wasn’t a dry eye on the team reading her story for the first time.

What is one thing you learned from your entry/experience?
Working on this project, the team had the opportunity to see first-hand how deeply holistic, human-centered care impacts the patient experience. Shiniqua’s care team would wheel her, hospital bed, heart pump, IV and all, from her heart and vascular hospital tower across the street to the pediatric NICU every day so she could hold her son and sing to him while they both recovered, showing a level of dedication and support beyond the OR and the technological advancements.
