The 2025 Dean’s Report for Brown University’s Division of Biology and Medicine, “For People and Planet,” is an update from Dean Mukesh K. Jain, MD, on his vision and goals for the Division, highlighting the year’s major achievements and plans for the coming year.

What was the most impactful part of your entry?
The most impactful part was its theme of “being on a mission” versus having a mission statement that sits on a website and is never looked at. We used active language and fun icons made to look like enamel pins to remind the reader that we are on a mission to improve health and well-being. This enlivened the text across the four pillars and enhanced the feeling of forward movement.

What is one thing you learned from your entry/experience?
One challenge that we faced was that as we reached press time, we were close but not quite ready to announce a major partnership with one of our affiliated hospital systems. This was huge news and so we decided to wait for the announcement before printing the publication. Ultimately, we could not imagine publishing this piece and NOT having this huge piece of news included so we decided to wait. Of course, this touched off a cascade of collateral impacts, from the designer who would now need to extend their contract in order to complete to the printer who was waiting for the print work and so on. It was the right call, but it meant what was intended to be a May publication became a September publication.
