The Department of Education announced six new interagency agreements that will transfer selected departmental responsibilities to four federal agencies as part of an effort to streamline operations and reduce the department’s direct oversight role. Under the newly established arrangements, functions will be delegated to the departments of Labor, Interior, Health and Human Services (HHS), and State.

Among the changes, the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) will transition to the HHS. The NCFMEA is charged with evaluating the accreditation standards used by foreign medical schools to determine whether they are comparable to those applied to U.S. medical schools.

The Department of Education also published a partnership fact sheet for Foreign Medical Accreditation (PDF) alongside this announcement.
