The AAMC submitted March 12 comments to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the proposed Strategic Plan for Disability Health Research FY26-FY30. The request for information acknowledges that “disability is a complex, multidimensional construct that may be conceptualized in different ways. Historically, the predominant model of disability in research and clinical care has been the medical model of disability.” It also notes that promoting the health and well-being of people with disabilities requires a coordinated approach that includes broad community input.
In its comments, the AAMC emphasized the importance of prioritizing disability inclusion in biomedical research and ensuring that individuals with disabilities are meaningfully engaged throughout the research process. The letter also called for expanded data collection, particularly on individuals with intersectional identities. Additionally, the association underscored the need for sustained partnerships between the NIH and disability-led organizations to advance disability health research and promote equitable inclusion in the scientific workforce.
