Newsworthy Research is a custom GPT created to help Emory University’s communications staff quickly understand complex scientific studies and inform potential media outreach strategies. The tool scans research papers, produces clear summaries with suggested story angles, and identifies qualities that attract news media, such as timeliness, relevance, human impact, novelty, and visuals. By applying generative AI, it standardizes the first pass, priming for initial discussions with the researchers and lets staff spend more time on strategy, writing, and outreach.

What was the most impactful part of your entry?
The most impactful part was seeing how quickly the tool improved workflow. It turned something that once felt slow and overwhelming into a clear, focused process. Research review became faster and more consistent, which helped us act on promising studies sooner, highlight discoveries that might have been overlooked, and elevate awareness of key findings for consumer audiences.

What is one thing you learned from your entry/experience?
Emory’s communications staff regularly reviews a high volume of scientific studies to find stories with strong media potential. The challenge was not a lack of review, but the time it took to fully understand each study. This work showed that AI can enhance communications work without removing the human element. When used thoughtfully, it can handle time-consuming tasks and give staff more space to apply the judgment, strategy, and creativity that only trained communicators can bring.
