Published biennially, this report provides the most current data available about active physicians and physicians in training. A series of figures and tables provides detailed statistics on active U.S. physicians and physicians in residency and fellowship programs for the 43 largest specialty groups.

Active Physicians

1.1 Active Physicians in the Largest Specialties, 2015

The table and figure show the number of active physicians in each of the 43 specialty categories featured in the Physician Specialty Data Report. Data are broken out by major professional activity, which includes patient care, teaching, and research.

1.2 Number of People per Active Physician by Specialty, 2015

The table and figure show the number of people in the United States per active physician in each of the 43 specialty categories featured in the Physician Specialty Data Report. Population data are from the United States Census Bureau.

1.3 Active Physicians by Sex and Specialty, 2015

The table shows the number and percentage of active physicians by sex for each of the 43 specialty categories featured in the Physician Specialty Data Report. The figure shows the percentage of active physicians who are female for each of the 43 specialty categories, listed in descending order of percentage female.

1.4 Active Physicians by Age and Specialty, 2015

The table shows the number and percentage of active physicians by age group for each of the 43 specialty categories featured in the Physician Specialty Data Report. The age categories are under age 55 and age 55 or older. The figure shows the percentage of active physicians who are age 55 or older for each of the 43 specialty categories, listed in descending order.
