On May 13, the House Appropriations Committee held a markup and approved its fiscal year (FY) 2027 spending bill by a vote of 32-28. The committee posted its mark of the bill (PDF) and a bill report (PDF).
The FY 2027 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies spending bill mirrors the subcommittee-approved level [refer to Washington Highlights, May 1], providing $7 billion in discretionary funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF), about $1.75 billion (20%) below FY 2026. Within that total, the bill would provide $6.4 billion for research and related activities, which is about $736 million (10.3%) below the FY 2026 enacted level. The AAMC joined a March 2026 letter (PDF) alongside 140 members of the Coalition for NSF (CNSF) advocating at least $9.9 billion, about $1.1 billion (12.5%) over FY 2026 NSF funding. CNSF also released a statement following the release of the President’s Budget Request calling on Congress to reject the White House’s proposed cuts to NSF within the annual appropriations process.
Next, the bill must be considered on the House floor.
