The bipartisan House Task Force on AI released its final report, submitted to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), on Dec. 18. The report, spearheaded by Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.) and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), outlined 66 findings and 89 recommendations to guide future U.S. artificial intelligence innovation and governance. Spanning multiple sectors, the report emphasizes the potential of AI to transform health care, education, and workforce development while addressing risks like data privacy and bias.

The report highlights AI’s ability to accelerate drug development, improve diagnostic accuracy, and streamline operations but stresses the need for robust data standards to enhance system interoperability. The report also recommends developing federal standards to ensure the safety and efficacy of AI in critical sectors, including health care, and adopting policies to prevent disparate outcomes. These steps aim to balance innovation with ethical considerations, safeguarding public trust in AI technologies.

The report follows an earlier effort in the Senate led by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) [refer to Washington Highlights, May 17].
