A bipartisan working group led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and including Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), and Todd Young (R-Ind.) released “A Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence Policy in the U.S. Senate” (PDF) on May 15. The document is the culmination of nearly a year of forums with interested parties and experts in AI. The road map touches on a number of key policy areas, including health care, and urges the relevant Senate committees to support the development and deployment of AI in health care, but to also establish appropriate guardrails and transparency to ensure that the technology is safe for patients. It also urges support for the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to ensure that these agencies have the tools to develop and/or regulate AI. Finally, the road map urges the committees to consider policies that will meaningfully improve health outcomes and health care delivery.
