The AAMC on Sept. 23 issued a statement reiterating its support of the Financial Accountability in Research (FAIR) Model, developed by the Joint Associations Group on Indirect Costs, of which AAMC is a founding member and contributor [refer to Washington Highlights, July 18]. AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton, MD, noted that support for facilities and administrative (also referred to as “indirect”) costs is “indispensable to enable research to occur” and that the FAIR model “further enhances transparency and accountability associated with the federal government’s support for these real expenses at research institutions across the country.”

More than 160 other national organizations across the research community have expressed their support (PDF) for the FAIR model as an alternative to policies that federal research agencies have sought to impose on research institutions [refer to Washington Highlights, Feb . 14].
