    Medical School Program Objective Tracker

The Medical School Program Objective Tracker is a tool for medical schools to organize the learning outcomes they require of all medical students.

    This resource is:

    • Free to AAMC- and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM)-member medical schools
    • Available to curriculum deans and their teams on the Institution Profile System
    • Set in Excel workbook format, allowing for easy data analysis
    • A rich source of information to support competency-based medical education (CBME)
    • A platform to collect sharable data

The AAMC is asking medical schools interested in sharing their data to do so, so trends can be studied and reported. Medical schools are invited to complete their Medical School Program Objective Tracker and submit data to the AAMC through the Institution Profile System by January 20, 2027. Participation is voluntary.

The Importance of Mapping Medical School Program Objectives

    To Support Accreditation

Because evaluation of the curriculum at the program objective level is an accreditation requirement according to some accreditation agencies, this resource can provide your institution with a systematic way to document efforts to meet accreditation requirements. Built-in reporting summaries may be especially useful to review with your medical school curriculum committee and document the formal curriculum review process at the program objective level.

    To Advance CBME Implementation

The Medical School Program Objective Tracker is the first nationally available tool for medical schools to document the text of their program objectives as well as map relationships to the Foundational Competencies for Undergraduate Medical Education, which lay out expected outcomes for all medical students, regardless of their degree type and future specialty. While medical schools may document and map their program objectives locally in unique ways, this first-of-its-kind resource standardizes the format so that trends and gaps can be understood nationally.

The built-in reporting may provide useful information for your medical school to evaluate your curriculum at the program objective level, consider changes, stimulate discussion among your curriculum committee and other leaders, and make evidence-based decisions to further your medical school’s advancement in CBME.

To Build Community-Wide Data Sharing and Reporting

The AAMC is interested in early adopters who wish to test the Medical School Program Objective Tracker and provide feedback so the AAMC can improve this resource for medical schools to use in the future.
