$10.6 billion in FY 2026 extramural grant funding remains to be obligated

With only two months left for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to obligate its Congressionally appropriated funds through extramural research awards in fiscal year (FY) 2026, the agency has obligated $23.3 billion to extramural research and research training grants, 69% of its extramural budget for grants. This Data Brief examines FY 2026 obligations through July 31, including obligations to competitive multiyear-funded (MYF) RPGs. Further information and updates on the NIH’s FY 2026 obligations and funding trends can be found on the AAMC website at the Tracking NIH Funding page.

The pace of NIH obligations accelerated over the month of July, but gaps remain in the number of grants awarded

The NIH has awarded approximately 10,000 fewer grants compared to this point in FY 2024.

Relative to FY 2024, the number of FY 2026 competitive RPGs have decreased by 8% and competitive R01s by 14%.

As of July 31, the NIH has allocated $1.1 billion toward competitive MYF RPGs, compared to $556.4 million in FY 2025.
