The NIH has obligated only half of all FY 2026 extramural funding

The federal government is three-quarters of the way through the 12-month fiscal year (FY) that began on Oct. 1, 2025. This Data Brief examines FY 2026 obligations to date, including obligations to competitive multiyear-funded (MYF) RPGs. Further information and updates on the NIH’s FY 2026 obligations and funding trends can be found on the AAMC website at the Tracking NIH Funding page: aamc.org/nihfunding.

NIH obligations surpass FY 2025, but continue to trail FY 2024

NIH obligated $18 billion in grant funding by June 30, surpassing FY 2025 levels but remaining $2.6 billion below FY 2024.

As of June 30, the NIH obligated nearly 9,000 fewer awards compared to this point in FY 2024.

NIH obligated $769 million in multiyear funding to competitive RPGs in FY 2026, vastly outpacing both FY 2024 and FY 2025.
