Table B3: Number of Active Residents, by Type of Medical School, GME Specialty, and Sex

2017-18 Active Residents

The table below displays the number and percentage of 2017-18 active residents who graduated from an international medical school, by specialty and sex, compared to the number and percentage of 2017-18 active residents who graduated from MD-granting and DO-granting U.S. and Canadian medical schools. International medical school graduates include both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens who graduated from any medical school outside of the U.S. and Canada. For example, there were 19 men and 29 women in 2017-18 who were active allergy and immunology residents who graduated from international medical schools, compared with 57 men and 179 women who were active allergy and immunology residents in 2017-18 who graduated from a medical school in the United States or Canada. The majority of active allergy and immunology residents in 2017-18 were women for both graduates from international medical schools and graduates from U.S. and Canadian medical schools. Counts and percentages shown for specialties do not include counts and percentages for the related subspecialties.
