The Robert G. Fenley Writing Awards: News Releases
Bronze
The arms of Major League Baseball pitchers are monitored closely. Pitch counts and velocity of thrown balls are tracked to ensure season-ending or even career-ending injuries are avoided.
Youth baseball has always been behind the curve.
University of Florida Health researcher Jason Zaremski, M.D., has been on the forefront of the battle to educate players, parents and coaches about overuse arm injuries. Indeed, they are the intended audience for the release.
What was the most impactful part of your entry?
The news release is most impactful when discussing the contrast between baseball velocity in the current age compared with the great pitchers of the past. This is done in an entertaining, readable manner to drive home this critically important point.
What challenge did you overcome?
I learned that being creative in flexible in the presentation of a release can do much to enhance its impact. While some embrace the “just the facts” approach, writing in an accessible way gets reporters and general readers alike engaged in a topic.
