House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) announced on Feb. 20 the creation of a new bipartisan task force on artificial intelligence. The 24-member task force will produce a report that includes policy proposals and recommendations for governing the use of AI. Johnson noted in his press release the importance of Congress working in a bipartisan way to both understand and address regulatory gaps around the advancing technology. The task force will be co-chaired by Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.) and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and will include representatives from the key committees of jurisdiction. Obernolte stated that the report would detail “the regulatory standards and congressional actions needed to both protect consumers and foster continued investment and innovation in AI.”
