The House on Tuesday passed a reauthorization bill (S. 3971), the Small Business Innovation and Economic Security Act, to extend the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs through 2031. The Senate passed this bill on March 3 [refer to Washington Highlights, March 13].

The SBIR and STTR programs fund small businesses and research institutions to develop and commercialize innovative technologies, with agencies like the National Institutes of Health setting aside part of their budgets to support this research.

The president is anticipated to sign this measure into law in the coming days.
