The House Appropriations Committee on July 23 released the fiscal year (FY) 2026 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) appropriations bill (PDF), maintaining the $7 billion in funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF) proposed in the version advanced by the CJS Subcommittee on July 15. The proposed funding level represents a $2.06 billion (23%) reduction compared to the FY 2025 enacted level and falls $2 billion below the level approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee for FY 2026 [refer to Washington Highlights, July 18].
In addition to the bill text, the committee released a bill summary (PDF) and accompanying report (PDF). Notably, the committee’s bill report encourages the administration to collaborate with the extramural research community to develop a streamlined approach to facilities and administrative cost reimbursement.
The House Appropriations Committee is expected to consider the FY 2026 CJS spending bill when members return after August recess.
