The House of Representatives approved by a vote of 400-15 on May 15 the fiscal year (FY) 2027 Military Construction-Veterans Affairs (Milcon-VA) appropriations bill (H.R. 8469), which included an amendment by Rep. André Carson (D-Ind.) to increase funding for VA Medical and Prosthetic Research by $94 million. This would bring the program’s funding to $994 million, restoring the $45 million cut in the House Appropriations Committee-passed version of the bill [refer to Washington Highlights, April 24]. A separate, bipartisan amendment led by Reps. Lou Correa (D-Calif.) and Jack Bergman (R-Mich.) emphasized the importance of maintaining funding for VA research in areas including oncology, traumatic brain injury, psychedelic-assisted therapies, and assistive devices.

The Senate will consider its version of the Milcon-VA appropriations bill next.
