The AAMC and 80 members of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Advocacy Coalition sent a letter of support for the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023 (S. 1302) to the lead sponsors of the legislation. The letter to Sens. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) emphasized the growing need for more physicians, particularly as the population continues to grow and age. The legislation, which was introduced on April 27, would provide 14,000 new Medicare-supported GME positions over seven years.
