A bipartisan group of senators, including Sens. Bill Cassidy, MD (R-La.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), has released a draft bill to add additional Medicare-supported graduate medical education (GME) slots. The legislation prioritizes training primary care doctors and psychiatrists while targeting shortages in rural and underserved areas. The plan aims to address the growing physician shortage and improve access to care nationwide. This draft legislation follows the work of a larger bipartisan GME working group in the Senate Finance Committee, which released a legislative outline to which the AAMC responded in June [refer to Washington Highlights, June 21].
