The AAMC sponsored and hosted an Oct. 23 maternal health convening organized by Women in Government Relations (WGR), a nonpartisan professional society focused on government relations and public affairs. Pathways to Progress: Pursuing Equity and Excellence in Maternal Health brought together prominent speakers dedicated to advancing maternal health equity and birthing justice in the United States, including New Jersey first lady Tammy Murphy. This was the AAMC’s second year hosting this event, having sponsored the inaugural convening in 2023 [refer to Washington Highlights, Dec. 8, 2023].

The event began with a panel discussion featuring women who have transformed their experiences with pregnancy and childbirth into meaningful change via advocacy, community collaborations, and awareness raising. Stacey Brayboy, MPA, senior vice president for public policy and government affairs at March of Dimes, then facilitated a panel discussion with congressional staff working to advance legislation to expand access to maternity care and improve outcomes for moms and babies, including the Keeping Obstetrics Local Act (S. 5236) and the NIH IMPROVE Act (S. 4147). Murphy provided the keynote address, highlighting how her Nurture New Jersey initiative has leveraged cross-sector partnerships to drive improvements in maternal health outcomes across the state.

The afternoon concluded with closing remarks from AAMC Chief Public Policy Officer Danielle Turnipseed, JD, MHSA, MPP, who highlighted the association’s commitment to advancing policies that address the maternal health crisis [refer to Washington Highlights, April 26].
