The AAMC sent an April 21 letter of support (PDF) to Reps. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), Sanford Bishop Jr. (D-Ga.), Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.), and Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) for their H-1Bs for Physicians and the Healthcare Workforce Act (H.R. 7961). The letter highlights the negative impact that the September 2025 presidential proclamation, Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers, would place on the physician shortage and deems the bill as an important first step in addressing these challenges faced by the academic medicine workforce.
The AAMC also joined 47 health care organizations in an April 15 letter (PDF) to the bill sponsors in support of the legislation, underscoring the consequences the $100,000 fee is already placing on health care employers.
Introduced in March, the bill would exempt physicians and other health care workers from the new $100,000 H-1B visa filing fee and prohibit additional fees from being imposed on health care workers that exceed the existing fees under the U.S. Code [refer to Washington Highlights, March 20].
