The AAMC was among 49 organizations in letters sent on July 10 to leaders of the House and Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittees urging increased support for nonhuman primate (NHP) research. Citing a recent report by the National Academies for Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the letters described “the value of NHP research in understanding fundamental biology and diseases that affect humans and animals alike,” but noted that “the current research environment is unstable and unsustainable, jeopardizing our national security and public health readiness.”
To support the judicious use and unique role of NHPs in research, the letter called for long-term solutions that would provide dedicated funding through the National Institutes of Health to support domestic breeding centers, the NHP research workforce, and a national, cross-agency plan for NHP resources.
