The AAMC on June 17 submitted a response (PDF) to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Ranking Member Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) request for information from providers (PDF) on how the House-passed reconciliation bill, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1), will impact access to care. In his letter, Sen. Sanders underscored his concerns with the legislation’s proposed cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, highlighting his disappointment that “the Senate is poised to pass the reconciliation bill without the benefit of a single committee hearing or markup.” To this end, Sen. Sanders’ letter invites health care providers to provide feedback on how policies contained in the legislation will impact their organizations and the patients they serve.
In its response, the AAMC thanked Sen. Sanders for supporting policies that strengthen the nation's health care, research, and education infrastructure, and referred him to a June 5 letter (PDF) the association submitted to his Republican colleagues [refer to Washington Highlights, June 6]. In these comments, the AAMC outlined its concerns with specific provisions of the House-passed reconciliation bill, urging Senate Republican leadership to reject cuts to the Medicaid program, ensure access to coverage via the ACA marketplace exchanges, and safeguard access to medical education by preserving core student financial aid programs.
