The AAMC sent an Oct. 24 letter of endorsement (PDF) to Reps. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) and Dina Titus (D-Nev.), offering continued support for the Medical Student Education Authorization Act of 2025 (H.R. 5428). Reintroduced by the two lawmakers in September, the bill would reauthorize the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Medical Student Education Program through fiscal year (FY) 2028.
Established in FY 2019, the program supports public medical schools in states with the highest projected primary care workforce shortages. It also recruits and trains medical students from rural, tribal, and under-resourced communities, with the goal of retaining them in these communities. Specifically, the Medical Student Education Authorization Act would authorize $75 million annually for FYs 2026 to 2028 and allow for the continuation of funding for the existing grant recipients.
The AAMC previously endorsed the bill in the 118th Congress [refer to Washington Highlights, May 2023].
