The AAMC joined over 100 other organizations in a Sept. 16 collective sign-on comment letter (PDF) to request an extension of the public comment period for the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) proposed rule to eliminate the duration of status for most F, J, and I visa holders.
The proposed rule currently has a public comment period of 30 days and is scheduled to close on Sept. 29. In their letter, the organizations specifically requested that the comment period be extended to at least 60 days, considering that the proposed rule is regarded as a “significant regulatory action” with an economic impact. The organizations also requested an extension due to the technically complex nature of the rule and the lack of advanced notice from the government. The organizations detailed that extending the comment period would enable more stakeholders to review and assess the proposed rule, supporting higher-quality public input and more informed agency decision-making.
The AAMC will submit a formal comment letter in opposition to the proposed rule within the requested Sept. 29 public comment period.
