The AAMC joined 46 organizations in a July 31 sign-on letter (PDF) to Senate Appropriations Committee Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) Subcommittee Chair Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.) and Ranking Member Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), to provide no less than $45 million for programs enacted under the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act (P.L. 117-105, PDF) in fiscal year 2027.
The Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act authorized funding for grants to train health care students, residents, and professionals to help reduce and prevent suicide, burnout, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders across the health care workforce. The letter highlights the successes and impact of the Lorna Breen programs, which were reauthorized earlier this year as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2026 (P.L. 119-75, PDF).
