The House on Sept. 15 passed by voice vote legislation (H.R. 5100) to extend the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The AAMC joined the Association of American Universities, the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, the American Council on Education, and AUTM in a Sept. 15 letter (PDF) to House Committee on Small Business Chair Roger Williams (R-Texas) and Ranking Member Nydia Velázquez (D-Puerto Rico), urging swift passage of the bill.
The letter noted that “Extending the SBIR and STTR programs before their scheduled expiration on September 30th is essential to sustaining the strength and prosperity of America’s innovation enterprise. H.R. 5100 provides a critical one-year extension, ensuring continuity for researchers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses that rely on these programs to advance research discoveries and U.S. competitiveness.”
The legislation will move to the Senate for consideration.
