The AAMC joined 101 signatories representing patients, providers, and public health organizations in a Sept. 2 letter (PDF) to congressional leaders urging inclusion of the Cure Hepatitis C Act of 2025 (S. 1941) in a broader health legislative package. The legislation is led by Sens. Bill Cassidy, MD (R-La.) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.).
The organizations noted that an oral medication has been available on the market for over ten years that cures over 95% of patients in 8 to 12 weeks. The letter further highlighted key provisions of the legislation, including providing nearly $10 billion in funding through 2031 to expand access to rapid screening, treatment, and services to support hepatitis C elimination, as well as empowering state and local public health systems, community health centers, opioid treatment programs, and correctional facilities to build lasting infrastructure, scale up existing prevention programs, and integrate hepatitis C services into their work.
