The AAMC joined a total of 500 organizations in a June 5 letter to House and Senate Appropriations Committee leadership (PDF) requesting that Congress “reject any cuts to NIH.” The letter outlined deep concerns with the president’s fiscal year (FY) 2026 budget request and how the request “proposes cutting the NIH budget by an astounding eighteen billion dollars” [refer to Washington Highlights, June 6]. The letter highlighted the AAMC-convened Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research’s FY 2026 funding recommendation of $51.3 billion for the NIH, emphasizing that the recommendation “speaks to the opportunity to shatter the boundaries of medical progress and empower more Americans to leave illnesses behind” [refer to Washington Highlights, April 11].
