The AAMC commemorated the 80th anniversary of the partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and academic medicine during a May 12 Capitol Hill briefing. The briefing, which highlighted how the collaboration trains physicians, advances research, and provides high-quality care to veterans, featured remarks from House Veterans Affairs Health Subcommittee Chair Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) and House Veterans Affairs Committee Ranking Member Mark Takano (D-Calif). AAMC President and CEO David Skorton, MD, along with panelists Deena McRae, MD, University of California System, and Meharvan “Sonny” Singh, PhD, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, detailed their experiences partnering with VA medical centers, noting that approximately 70% of all U.S. physicians complete part of their training in VA facilities.
