The AAMC submitted Feb. 25 comments to the Department of Education (PDF) on its notice of proposed rulemaking implementing student aid changes under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21, PDF). In the letter, the AAMC urged the department to preserve key loan protections and clarify provisions to prevent new financial barriers for medical students.

The association also joined a March 2 Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions statement (PDF) expressing concern that the proposed narrow definition of “professional” degree programs excludes many graduate health professions programs. In addition, the AAMC signed onto a higher education community letter (PDF) on March 2 led by the American Council on Education urging the department to comply with the Higher Education Act’s master calendar requirements and provide institutions sufficient time to implement the new regulations, among other concerns.

The proposed regulations, released in January, reflect the consensus reached among negotiators during the Reimagining and Improving Student Education (RISE) Committee rulemaking deliberations [refer to Washington Highlights, Jan. 30]. The final rules are expected in the spring.
