The AAMC submitted two letters on the Department of Education's proposed accreditation rule, Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization; The Secretary's Recognition of Accrediting Agencies (ED-2025-OPE-1042), which proposes to significantly revise federal policies governing higher education accreditor recognition and oversight. The proposal, released on Aug. 20, closed for public comments on Sept. 21.
In Sept. 16 comments submitted through a coalition led by the American Council on Education (PDF), the AAMC joined higher education organizations in supporting efforts to streamline initial accreditation processes while cautioning against provisions that could increase costs and add administrative requirements. The coalition also called for additional stakeholder engagement in the rulemaking process. Separately, the AAMC and the American Medical Association submitted Sept. 21 comments that emphasized the value of the medical education accreditation process (PDF) and raised concerns about provisions in the proposed rule that would “hollow out our nation’s quality assurance program for MD graduates.”
