The AAMC joined over 500 organizations in endorsing the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research’s FY 2027 funding recommendation for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) (PDF), which encouraged lawmakers to provide at least $51.3 billion for the NIH base budget, $4.1 billion (8.7%) more than fiscal year (FY) 2026.
The statement thanked lawmakers for their long-standing bipartisan support, including the investment in FY 2026 funding, and emphasized the benefits that medical research offers patients. “Robust support for medical research makes Americans healthier,” the letter stated. “Patients across the country — from urban centers to rural communities — benefit from medical research supported by the NIH, which serves as the foundation for nearly every preventive intervention, diagnostic, treatment, and cure in practice today.”
The AAMC also joined 262 organizations supporting at least $500 million for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) (PDF), which would represent a $155 million (45%) increase above FY 2026.
