The AAMC sent a March 2 letter (PDF) to Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) endorsing the reintroduction of the Foreign Medical School Accountability Fairness Act (S. 3757). The bill has been supported by the AAMC in previous Congresses [refer to Washington Highlights, Aug. 9, 2024].

The Foreign Medical School Accountability Fairness Act would apply the minimum requirements to participate in federal Title IV student aid programs to all medical schools outside of the United States and Canada. These requirements include enrollment of at least 60% non-U.S. citizen students and maintaining a minimum 75% pass rate on the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. The bill seeks to remove the current exemption of certain foreign medical schools from these requirements, bringing fairness to eligibility and ensuring students attending international medical schools are educated under consistent and rigorous standards.
