The AAMC on July 30 submitted comments (PDF) to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in response to a request for information on a proposed policy that would cap the number of Research Project Grants (RPGs) an individual can simultaneously serve on as principal investigator or multi-principal investigator.

In its letter, the AAMC highlighted shared goals with the NIH, including careful and intentional stewardship of taxpayer investment in biomedical research, the importance of a diverse scientific workforce, and funding for a breadth of institutions and investigators. However, the letter also expressed significant concerns regarding the impacts on NIH grantees that would result from implementing such a policy as proposed, including detrimental impacts to team science and exploratory research.
