The AAMC on Aug. 19 submitted comments (PDF) to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in response to a request for information on measuring and rewarding scientific impact. The agency requested feedback in order to identify “specific, measurable indicators and incentives that reflect the collaborative, rigorous, and mission-driven nature of modern biomedical science.”
In its comments, the AAMC expressed agreement in the importance of using a broad set of metrics to determine impact, noting that “scientific impact can be reflected in a myriad of outputs beyond publications and citation metrics and [we] believe that the use of additional indicators can enhance our understanding of both research productivity and the effectiveness of grant funding.”
The letter additionally cited related AAMC efforts on assessing the value of scientific research, including a joint publication with RAND and the Credit for Data Sharing initiative.
